God usually prepares his people for temptation before he calls them to it he gives strength according to the day, and, before a sharp trial, gives more than ordinary comfort. After great honours put upon us, we must expect something that is humbling as Paul has a messenger of Satan sent to buffer him, after he had been in the third heavens. Great privileges, and special tokens of divine favour, will not secure us from being tempted. Immediately after the heavens were opened to him, and the Spirit descended on him, and he was declared to be the Son of God, and the Saviour of the world, the next news we hear of him is, he is tempted for then he is best able to grapple with the temptation. The time when it happened: Then there is an emphasis laid upon that. Concerning Christ's temptation, observe, I. We have here the story of a famous duel, fought hand to hand, between Michael and the dragon, the Seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent, nay, the serpent himself in which the seed of the woman suffers, being tempted, and so has his heel bruised but the serpent is quite baffled in his temptations, and so has his head broken and our Lord Jesus comes off a Conqueror, and so secures not only comfort, but conquest at last, to all his faithful followers. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
